CNC Surface and Form Grinding Services

What is CNC Grinding?

CNC Surface grinding uses a CNC controller connected to a precision surface grinder that can achieve very accurate contours with incredible surface finishes. A CNC grinder also lends itself well to repetitive production grinding since we can quickly load parts and go.

What can we do for you?

With the addition of our Amada Meister V3 production surface and form grinder, WMPI can grind a wide variety of components and shapes with minimal operator attended time. This equipment has a working area of 6.0” x 18.0” (longer parts can be accommodated with multiple setups). We regularly work to tolerances of .0001” in size, shape and flatness. With the ability to program to your CAD model or drawings, we can grind flat or 3-D contours. We also have 2-D and 3-D modeling capabilities available here; our capable designers can assist you. We also design and build any needed grinding or checking fixtures in-house in our state-of-the-art tool room.

Surface finishes and dimensional tolerances will vary depending on the project and the type of materials used but we can typically hold as fine as 8Ra” and as tight as .0001” tolerance. The type of wheel used for grinding also plays a big role in tolerances and finishes. A CNC grinder is able to vary wheel & table speeds to foster the best grinding conditions, use coolant to control temperatures and can also dress contours onto the grinding wheel. Let's take a look at your project and see what the best production methods might be. We can help you pick out the best options for your project.

Frequently Asked Questions about CNC Grinding

Surface finishes and dimensional tolerances will vary depending on the project and the type of materials used but we can typically hold as fine as 8Ra" and as tight as .0001" tolerance.

There are times when a ground finish is preferable to the smoothness of a Wire EDM finish. In a stamping die, slug retention is one of those factors. A surface or jig ground finish can help keep slugs in the die blocks and not pulling out when the punches retract.

We can grind almost any metal, hard or soft. Magnetic materials would be held by a magnetic chuck and non-magnetic materials would either be blocked in or use a fixture to hold them.

This machine works great for repetitive production grinding. We can use the magnetic chuck or a custom fixture to hold parts. Once the machine is loaded and running we can typically run it minimally attended. That translates into cost savings.
